A viral video uploaded on Facebook last May 18, 2017 caught a mother hitting and kicking her daughter a number of times in Balsahan-Bisita District of Kawit, Cavite.

Municipal Social Welfare Development (MSWD) in Kawit investigated the incident and talked to the victim, mother and barangay captain.  According to the mother, she was caught by emotions after her daughter disobeyed her for leaving their house.

The daughter in the video was only 12 years old and her mother is a single parent raising three (3) more kids by selling sampaguita.

It was decided that charges will not be filed against the mother as it will not be beneficial for the family. Instead, the MSWD and the Local Government of Cavite noted that it will closely monitor the family and help the girl go back to school.

The Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC) condemns incidents any forms of violence among children.

The National Baseline Study on Violence Against Children (NBS-VAC) conducted in the Philippines reveals that 80% of children have experienced violence in their lifetime; and violence, whether physical, psychological or sexual, is highly prevalent in the country. It can be seen that the girl in the video was subjected to physical assault in public by her mother, causing embarrassment on the part of the child. CWC strongly encourages the practice of positive discipline to children as it promotes protection of every child in the home and in the community.
