The Philippines’ Second National Summit on Children held on 12-13 July 2012 in Manila brought together representatives from ten (10) inter-agency councils and committees on children in the country and delegates from child-focused international and local non-governmental organizations. The Secretary of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Honorable Corazon Juliano- Soliman welcomed the delegates and set the tone of the Summit by dramatically describing the worsening condition of Filipino children. She reminded the participants to keep the image in mind during the Summit and while discussing how to coordinate and collaborate more effectively with one another as child-focused agencies.

The ASEAN Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Children (ACWC) concluded its Fifth Meeting convened on 2-5 July 2012 at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, Indonesia. The ACWC deliberated on the operationalisation of its Work Plan 2012-2016. The concept papers of 12 projects and activities were discussed at the Meeting for implementation in 2012-2014. The basis for prioritizing the projects includes the relevance, the impact, and meaningful contribution to the promotion and protection of the rights of women and children in the region.

The 2nd ASEAN Children's Forum: Continuing the Dialogue with Child Participation PDF Print E-mail

What began as an inspired thought that children should be able to participate and express their views on regional issues within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the ASEAN Children’s Forum (ACF) is now in full swing. The conduct of the 2nd ACF will be held in Singapore, University Town from 6-8 June 2012.

The ACF is the regional mechanism of child participation in the region and serves as a channel where children can express their views on urgent regional issues affecting them and how these can be resolved by governments in partnership with the children.

Children Call to Action – Build a “Child-Friendly Philippines” PDF Print E-mail

The Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC) led by Executive Director Brenda S. Vigo will hold the 2012 Philippine National Children’s Conference (PNCC) with the theme “Child Friendly Philippines: A Caring and Protective Society for Children” on April 16-18, 2012 at the Lancaster Hotel, Shaw Boulevard, Mandaluyong City.

Children aged 10-17 years old from various organizations and children’s association nationwide will participate in this three-day event.  The PNCC will serve as a venue for children to have an appreciation of current and emerging issues affecting them.  It is also a platform for children’s consultation on how they can be actively engaged by government in addressing the issues identified.PNCC at Mandaluyong City

The activity specifically aims to achieve a common understanding on Child Friendly Philippines:  A Caring and Protective Society for Children and how this can be achieved by various sectors at all levels.  The Conference will be an opportunity for children participants to be given appropriate information on the current situation and emerging issues on children at the national and local level, and for them to come up with a children’s plan of action and statement.  It will also elect children delegates to the Second ASEAN Children’s Forum (ACF) to be held in Singapore in June 2012. The ACF is a mechanism for child participation in the ASEAN structure.

Emerging issues and threats to making the Philippines a child-friendly society will be discussed such as Violence Against Children,  Internet Safety Access, Impact of Media on the Young Minds, Disaster Risk Reduction and Management and How Children Can Help, Children in the Changing Climate and the ASEAN Children’s Forum (ACF). The participants will be given an opportunity to navigate the ACF Website.

The event will be graced by MTRCB Chairperson Grace Poe-Llamanzares, UNICEF-Philippines Country Representative Mr. Tomoo Hozumi, Mandaluyong City Mayor Benhur Abalos, DSWD Assistant Secretary Florita R. Villar,  GMA 7 Candice Montenegro, among others.

Call for Entries for the 2012 Presidential Award for Child-Friendly Municipalities and Cities PDF Print E-mail

The Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC) announces the commencement of the 2012 Presidential Award for Child Friendly Municipalities and Cities. Letter of invitation together with the Entry forms were sent to all Local Government Units (Cities and Municipalities). The entry form includes a timetable, culminating the awarding ceremonies in October.

The Presidential Award will be conferred to deserving local government units in recognition of their vital role in promoting children’s rights to survival, development, protection and participation as well as in ensuring child-friendly governance.

Validation visits are scheduled in June to July at the regional level and August to September by the National Award Committee to select the Presidential Awardees.

Interested municipalities/cities may submit the duly-filled up Entry Forms and corresponding documents to the Provincial Award Committee (PAC) or to their Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office on or before March 16, 2012. Highly Urbanized and Independent Component Cities shall directly submit to the Regional Award Committee (RAC) through their respective DSWD Field Offices on or before April 27, 2012.
